Iowa House approves bill to protect gay students E-mail
DES MOINES, Iowa - The House has approved a measure protecting gay and lesbian students from harassment.

It also assures that private religious schools are free to offer their anti-gay teachings.

The bill was approved tonight 62-to-37.

Becuase it undewent some changes in the House, it heads back to the Senate for more debate. Last week the Senate approved a similar measure 36-to-14.

Governor Culver has indicated he would sign the measure if it reaches his desk.

The bill approved tonight lists other criteria for which students must be protected from harassment. They include age, creed, national origin, race, religion, marital status, gender and political party.

Under the House-approved version, public and private schools would be required to report harassment incidents to the state and indicate what the school did in response.
