Studies are revealing that a higher number of gay men are being diagnosed with HIV. The results of a number of studies released over the last fortnight reveal that the number of gay men being diagnosed with HIV is significantly on the rise.
Australia - The number of gay men that have been diagnosed with HIV is now being compared to African nations. Up to 18 percent (in inner-city areas) of gay men have been diagnosed with HIV. The diagnosis of HIV is a "massive epidemic" according to some doctors, with almost three quarters of people diagnosed with HIV in New South Wales this year obtaining the disease from a person of the same gender.
UK - 2,300 gay men have been diagnosed with HIV in the last twelve months. This is the highest number of gay men in a year that has been diagnosed on record. It is now estimated that in the UK alone, 28,000 gay men have HIV. An alarming fact released, is that up to 9,000 of them are not aware that they even have the disease. London is one of the highest cities in the UK in which the gay community has been diagnosed, with 8.4 percent of gay men have HIV.
South Africa and India are now the two highest countries with residents having HIV. In both countries, the primary reason for the spreading of AIDS is same-sex sexual activity. It is estimated that in some parts of South Africa, up to a third of the gay population has HIV.
These alarming figures have been released in time for AIDS Awareness Week, with events taking place across the world to create awareness for how AIDS can be prevented. Source: generationq.net |
