Former Tempe Mayor Giuliano now leads charge for gay, lesbian organization |
|
He served as mayor of Tempe from 1994 to 2004, the youngest person elected to that office. He received praise for his work on the Tempe Town Lake and Rio Salado developments. In addition, he helped lead the charge to bring more residents downtown. Last year, Giuliano was named president of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. Giuliano, 50, works in New York and Los Angeles, but keeps a home in Tempe.
HOW DID IT AFFECT HIM? Giuliano is on a world stage now. He was one of Out magazine's 100 most influential people in gay culture in the December issue. "I'm running in totally new circles," he said. "If someone told me a couple years ago I would be having dinner with the cast of Desperate Housewives, . . . I'd probably say, 'That's not something I would be doing.' "
WHAT'S UP NOW? Working to make sure news and entertainment media outlets "cover and portray stories about gay Americans in a fair, accurate and inclusive way." Serving as GLAAD's chief spokesman, raising funds, managing corporate relations, directing a staff of about 60 people and leading the 25,000-member group.
HOPES FOR THE NEW YEAR? It's a "historic" time for gay rights, Giuliano said, and he plans to help history happen. "Our lives are more visible than ever before, meaning we need to lead the media advocacy effort. It's a great honor and great responsibility."
What ever happened to ...Becky Jackson: The president and CEO of the Chandler Chamber of Commerce lost a bid at becoming a city councilwoman. But she remains active in city issues, heading the committee seeking support for a proposed $450 million bond for road improvements, parks and other issues. She soon will chair the Fresh Start Women's Foundation.
Tim Terry: When he's not busy telling stories about American Indian traditions at the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort, the 41-year-old Pima works as a counselor in the Gila River Indian Community's alcohol and drug-abuse program.
