Bishop Gallardo Martin del Campo called on Coahuila state legislators to disapprove a proposal to legalize homosexual unions in his state.
The Roman Catholic bishop of Vera Cruz, Mexico, has called on his state’s legislators to disapprove a proposed law that would legalize homosexual unions as marriage. Bishop Luis Felipe Gallardo Martín del Campo declared that the Catholic Church defends humanity and the human family saying that it is based on marriage between one man and one woman. “The great problem is that there is a there is a desire to give this the familiar condition of marriage when all of this could simply be agreements, reciprocal agreements, or mutual support without the need of calling it family, marriage, wedding, and consequently to give it the same rights the heterosexual marriage has”, said the bishop. The bishop said furthermore that “everyone can come together for honorable reasons, it is a constitutional right. What is wrong, not only from a Catholic point of view but also an anthropological one – basic and fundamental – is to go beyond the human nature that we all share.” Recently, the Lesbian, Gay, Trans-sexual, Tranvestite, and Transgender collective of Mexico proposed for Vera Cruz a Law for Living Together, similar to that which have already been approved in the Federal District of Mexico City and the state of Coahuila.
